Key mechanism for systemic delivery of RNAi therapeutics using LNPs discovered

Alnylam Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a leading RNAi therapeutics company, announced today that it has discovered a key mechanism related to the systemic delivery of RNAi therapeutics using lipid nanoparticles (LNPs). The new pre-clinical research was presented at the “Advances in Biopharmaceuticals” Keystone Symposium held January 8-13, 2010 in Midway, Utah, and was performed in collaboration with scientists at the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics.

Impulse Accelerated Technologies' FPGA compiler used to deploy DNA biotechnology genome search algorithm

Impulse Accelerated Technologies today announced that its CoDeveloper C-to-FPGA compiler has been used to develop and deploy a DNA biotechnology genome search algorithm on a new, modular FPGA acceleration platform created by Pico Computing, of Seattle, Washington. The Xilinx FPGA-accelerated bioinformatics algorithm, written in C, performs sequence analysis and pair-match scoring of DNA runs with lengths of 25 base pairs.

Immune cells causes inflammation in thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy

A cell type that causes significant scarring in lung disease appears to have a similar effect in Graves' disease, University of Michigan Health System researchers have found. The cells, called fibrocytes, are present at a higher than normal frequency in patients with Graves' disease, according to a new study, the first to associate fibrocytes with this autoimmune disease.

Jiangsu Government grants $1.8M for research and development of hUC-MSC technologies

The Jiangsu Government's Science and Technology Department has announced a $1.8 million grant - the Jiangsu Technological Achievements Transformational Grant - to support the research and development of human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cell (hUC-MSC) technologies. The grant recipient and administrator, Shenzhen Beike Biotechnology Co., Ltd. (http://www.beikebiotech.com ), is working with Jiangsu University and Nanjing University's Drum Tower Hospital to fulfill the grant's requirements.
