NHI leases Suite Living Senior Specialty Services for $4.2M

National Health Investors, Inc. announced today new investments totaling $7.2 million. The transactions include a purchase/leaseback of a 24-unit assisted living and memory care facility in Minnesota with Suite Living Senior Specialty Services (formerly known as Comforts of Home) for $4.2 million and the origination of a $3.0 million second mortgage secured by interests in three skilled nursing facilities in Texas totaling 311 beds as part of a bridge to HUD financing for the borrower.

JDRF to begin diabetes research collaboration on drugs for replicating insulin-producing cells

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, a leader in setting the agenda for diabetes research worldwide, said today that it will begin a diabetes research collaboration with Pfizer, Hadassah Medical Organization, and The Hebrew University of Jerusalem on drugs to replicate and regenerate insulin-producing cells in people with type 1 diabetes.

Overall mortality rates from the end of 2007 to the beginning of 2010 at Bay Medical Center in Panama City, Florida have dropped from 3.4 to 2.1. A 1.3-point drop represents a huge reduction for any hospital and translates into lives saved.

Older adult specialists travel to Haiti to render care at make-shift nursing homes

Two months after the devastating earthquake hit Haiti, the needs of older adults in the region remain an urgent priority. Dr. Martin Gorbien, a geriatrician, and Lauren Kessler, a licensed clinical social worker, both from Rush University Medical Center, will be among the first older adult specialists to travel to Haiti to provide care at make-shift nursing homes.

GE Capital, Healthcare Financial Services has provided $31.5 million as part of a $145 million senior secured credit facility for Harden Healthcare, LLC. Harden will use the proceeds of the financing to provide additional growth capital and to refinance its existing debt facilities. GE Capital is the administrative agent for the credit facility. GE Capital Markets served as co-lead arranger and joint bookrunner.

LSUHSC: Differences in drug metabolism can lead to differences in the effectiveness of candidate drug

Research led by Wayne L. Backes, PhD, Professor of Pharmacology and Associate Dean for Research at LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans School of Medicine, has found that drug metabolism depends not only upon which enzymes are present in an individual, but also how they interact, and that can be the difference in whether a drug is safely eliminated from the body or is converted into a toxic or carcinogenic byproduct.
